Oh Dear | Tips to Remember for Deer-Car Collisions

With harvest season among us, the risk of hitting a deer increases in the fall and winter. Unfortunately, I have recently fell victim to hitting a deer of my own. 

I will admit, when the accident occurred, as prepared as I thought I was, my mind seemed to go blank as my baby boy started crying in the backseat of my now crashed vehicle. 

Many of us don't expect to be hit with this situation, yet it is always good to be prepared with what you would do. Read through these steps to ensure you are prepared should a deer find you. 

1. Move your vehicle to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights.

2. Assess any injuries. Make sure you and your passengers are alright. 

3. Call the police. Let them know if the deer is blocking traffic, putting other drivers at risk. 

4. Check if your vehicle is safe to drive. If not, call for a tow.

5. Call your insurance provider. There is a standard amount of time that you can enter the claim, and report damage to your vehicle. 

Accidents are unexpected and unwanted; but being prepared can help minimize frustrations. Make sure that you have a trusted insurance agent to help you through the questions and uncertainties.
